There have been many changes in the game of football. So many players, legends, lore, outliers, risks, records, opinions, games. But one fact that has continued to remain constant decade after decade is that defense wins championships. There are numerous cases that can back this up: the 2007 New York Giants containing Tom Brady in Super Bowl XLII, the 2013 Seahawks hitting Peyton Manning in the mouth in XLVIII, The Broncos holding MVP Cam Newton to 10 points in Super bowl L (50), The Patriots holding the Rams to 3 points in Super Bowl LIII, and last but not least the Tampa Bay Buccaneers giving us the blueprint on how to stop Mahomes in Super Bowl LV back in 2021. The list goes on and on and has gotten longer with this Eagles team.

Yes Jalen Hurts won MVP and it’s well deserved. I’m not at all a Hurts doubter and always thought he was and is a top QB in this league. This is now two games, coincidentally in the Super Bowl, that Hurts has outplayed Patrick Mahomes. He had a few key runs in big moments to keep drives alive as if they forgot he’s a threat to run, and made a lot of key throws outside the numbers on fades and outs. Outside of the early pick he played flawless and was in control the entire game. I also know what I watched and that Eagles defense most notably the D-line is the main reason the Eagles won this game.

I remember some of the post game comments after Super bowl LVII a few years ago. A majority of the Eagles guys had a lot to say about the playing grass as a reason they couldn’t provide a decent pass rush. In my opinion this was a factor as that Eagles defense broke the sack record. You don’t go from breaking the sack record to all of a sudden slipping out of your rush start. Although this was not the same defense, playing on turf made it a lot more even, and you and me both saw the outcome. In every single quarter of this game, the Eagles were constantly in the lap of Mahomes and I’m not buying into the fact that this was a bad Chiefs O-line either. They were the only team to have two 1st team all pro offensive line men in Joe Thuney and Creed Humphrey, with starting guard Tre Smith also making the Pro Bowl this year. They got man handled plain and simple. The front four and the rotational reservers were unblock-able generating 6 sacks and 10 hits. This constant pressure led to a pick 6 by Cooper DeJean and another interception by Zach Baun that turned into points.

Congrats again to the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s nice to see that in an offensive league, defense still wins championships.
