What is a Remnant? I know for a fact we have heard this on Sundays by some charismatic preacher patting his forehead to remove sweat with a hanker-chief or towel with his initials on it. Hooping and hollering and more than likely using it out of context to pull the congregation into a shout. The way most use the word Remnant is not the actual way. So again what is a Remnant?

According to the Law of First Mention, we see the word Remnant first being used in Genesis 45:7 in the NASB1995. It comes from the Hebrew word She’ar which means a portion of people left after disaster, especially a disaster identified with divine judgment. It’s a term used to describe people who remain faithful to God and experience periods of restoration.

Now, In Genesis 45 Joseph is once again facing his brothers, now as a high ranking official in Egypt, since he was sold by them so many years ago. He comes to terms that although he was rejected, abandoned, envied and sold it worked out because God used it in order to eventually save them from the famine that was looming. Verse 7 says

“God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant in the earth, and to keep you alive by a great deliverance.”

Based on this context, a remnant in my opinion are people who have been preserved for not just a set of present events, but events in the future. Here’s why………. Joseph came to the conclusion that the reason for his brothers preservation (the progenitors of the 12 tribes of Israel) was for the overall plan of redemption by God through his son Jesus. Had Joseph’s brothers died in the famine……… there would be no lineage for Jesus to come through like he did.

With that said. A Remnant is returning to the world of sports. I’m not saying there is a disaster coming, but every single week there are more and more players paying homage and recognizing Jesus Christ as their lord and savior and it’s a blessing to see. I don’t think it’s a coincidence, the impact of sports are at an all time and either this is positive or negative still needs time to answer, but recognition of Jesus by these guys I believe is going to go a long way.
